Zoos Victoria has welcomed a move by the Victorian Government to introduce free admission for children under 16 years of age to Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee Open Range Zoo on weekends, Victorian public holidays and Victorian Government school holidays. So now there's really no excuse to head to the Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary or the Werribee Open Range Zoo!

Our family has been to all three and they each offer an amazing experience everytime. Here's a rundown:

It's about getting connected...getting involved...having fun and learning about all creatures great and small at the Melbourne Zoo.

With more than 320 species on view, Melbourne Zoo offers a window into the diversity of the world's wildlife.

Visiting the Zoo is an opportunity to get back in touch with the wonders of nature – only 4km from the city centre. This year it's an exciting year at the zoo as Melbourne Zoo is celebrating its 150 year anniversary at Royal Park. We'll be counting down the months until the 150th Anniversary flagship event and one-of-a-kind public art event, 'Mali in the City', that will see a herd of 50 artist-designed Malis appearing in the City from August. Imagine life-size sculptures transforming the city's streets, parks, neighbourhoods and public spaces into an open air, free to view, visual spectacular!

We recommend getting to the zoo early, packing plenty of snacks, a picnic, sunscreen and bottled water.

Everything is a top attraction at the zoo but a few worth noting and 'must do's' are the Orang-utan Santuary where you'll go on a journey along an elevated boardwalk and ascend into their tree-top world. Trail of the Elephants is a multi-award winning development that takes visitors into an Asian village and garden setting which is home to the Zoo's five elephants: Bong Su, Mek Kapah, Dokkoon, Num-Oi and Kulab.

For the upcoming School Holidays, kids can find out what it's like to be a Melbourne Zoo Keeper.

At Werribee Open Range Zoo, you'll find an amazing array of animals living on 225 hectares of wide, open savannah and it's only 30 minutes from the city centre. Ever Tuesday is Toddler Tuesday - a special day just for Toddlers. Every Tuesday is Toddler Tuesday at the Werribee Open Range Zoo. Fab activities to keep the under 5's 'wildly' entertained all day. Kids can feed giraffe and meerkats, take a kid-friendly safari tour across the savannah or sing, dance and play to African-inspired songs in the African Village Dance Party!

Three Western Lowland Gorillas have moved into their new home - a 6,000 square metre spectacular island home. Silverback Motaba and his two youngest sons, Yakini and Ganyeka, are enjoying their bachelor pad, complete with all mod cons for gorillas and visitors!

There's no better time to embark on an African adventure, with Werribee Open Range Zoo going ‘safari mad' these school holidays.

The zoo's safari theme celebrates the launch of the amazing new African Waterhole area which teams with mixed herds of zebra, ostrich, Waterbuck and African Kudu.
The newly transformed African-inspired landscape is a major highlight of the picturesque 40-minute Safari Bus Tour which is included in the zoo's general admission price. Rhinos, giraffe, and antelope are among the many other stars on this popular tour.

Feel like a weekend getaway? Put Healesville Sanctuary on the map!

Let the kids marvel and explore the wonder of the Australian wildlife in a natural zoo setting. Healesville Sanctuary has more than 200 species of wildlife in 31 hectares of bushland enclosures.

You'll be on the edge of your seat from beginning to end as you watch the thrilling Spirits of the Sky display, demonstrating the magnificent flight and hunting skills of several iconic Australian species, such as the Peregrine Falcon, Black Breasted Buzzard, Barking Owl, and of course, the breathtaking Wedge-tailed Eagle.

Healesville Sanctuary officially launches its exciting new flight aviary spectacular - LAND OF PARROTS - these school holidays (Sunday 1 April 2012).

Fly in to Land of Parrots this Autumn where the chatter is all about parrots and the experience dazzling! Australia's iconic parrots from the smallest budgerigars to the largest cockatoos are waiting to meet you, up-close and personal in a new immersive walk-through aviary experience. Get among some the Australian skies brightest and best-loved birds as you experience dazzling flybys, hosted interactive bird-feeds and bird talks from the 'eggsperts'.

Not forgetting the younger members of the family...there's a playground for kids to let loose and a super huge bouncy wall, there's also a BBQ and picnic area to laze around.

And that's just a handful of the things that will make you go wild at the zoo this season. If you want to hang out some more, take out membership. As a Zoos Victoria member you can visit us and hang out with your favourite animals as often as you like. An hour today, an afternoon tomorrow, maybe this weekend.
