Behold, the family ski trip: deep snow, long drives, and even longer lift lines. Here are a few essential tips that are all but guaranteed to make your next adventure a delight (and not a disaster).

Whether you want to build a snowman, snowboard, toboggan, throw snowballs or learn to ski - our easy guide will have you preparing a trip in no time and if it's snowplay you're after, pick Mt Baw Baw, Lake Mountain and Mt Stirling and you can be home in time for dinner!

Have Strategy, Will Travel

For airport ease (if you're coming from interstate), fly early to avoid delays and rent equipment at your destination.

Get soggy mittens or frozen toes and you're done before you've even started. Come prepared: thermals, goggles, hand warmers, gloves, sunscreen, lip balm, and chocolate for an instant energy hit.

So, where to head?



Melbourne's family fun mountain is affordable, exciting, and very close. Just a 2 hour drive from the city CBD.

Lake Mountain is an adventure playground ALL YEAR ROUND. Ideal for not only skiing and tobogganing if it's building snowmans' or throwing snowballs there's an abundance of snow play areas. Family friendly packages are also on offer. If you don't get to that ski trip this winter, there's a Summer Program full of things to do. Try your hand at flying foxes, dune buggies, disc golf or mountain biking during summer months. If you're making a weekend or week of it there's NO accommodation on Lake Mountain but there is a range of accommodation options in the Marysville (30 mins at the bottomof the hill) Triangle area. A bit further afield Taggerty or the Yarra Valley also provide a great base from which to explore the mountain.

Known as the 'powder capital' of Australia, Hotham holds the record for the highest annual snowfall of any Victorian resort over the past decade. Built on a spectacular mountain ridge, the resort features jaw-dropping views and terrain to suit all abilities. The village has a snowsports school, day-care centre, day spas, shopping, restaurants and nightlife. The huge range of day and night activities includes sunset and grooming tours, snow kiting, dog sled adventures and mini-skidoo rides for the kids.

At Hotham you will find a well-staffed, professional and exciting Kids Snowzone, where children from 3 to 14 can learn how to ski or board (7yrs+ only). There is a Class 1 child minding facility called Hotham Daycare, conveniently located on level two of the Kids Snowzone building. There are also walk-on, beginner slopes that are extremely gentle for even the tiniest of tots who have never been skiing before. If you want some time out, book them in for Daycare. There's also plenty of accommodation options from Chalets, Apartments or Motels and don't forget that you can save by packaging your lift tickets, snowsports lessons and equipment hire with select accommodation - just ask your accommodation consultant when making your booking. If you (or more likely the kids!) aren't up for the drive you can fly directly into Hotham Airport.



If it's day tripping you want look no further than Mt Baw Baw. Surrounded by National Park it's an easy drive from Melbourne and offers alpine skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing to tobogganing and snow play.

Here's to a trip that's all altitude, no attitude. Opening weekend is the 9 - 10th June 2018.

If you don't want snow (because the mountains aren't always about the snow!) head to the Kids Adventure Festival. This festival will give kids the chance to experience mountain biking, trail running, camp outs, damper cooking plus heaps of other outdoor activities scheduled over the 2 days...

This weekend is set be to loads of fun for both kids and parents alike; enabling participants to get outside and run-a-muck in a safe environment!

Drop the kids off at Froglets Day Camp for a little bit of skiing, a little bit of snow play and a few activities to make this camp loads of fun for the kids while Mum and Dad are out skiing.



If it's reliable snow coverage, a large playing field and adventure galore head to Falls Creek. It hosts over 5000 beds in the village that suits every budget, there's also a day care centre, shopping, night life, day spa - the works!

The Kids Snowsports School (for ages three to five) is a theme-park-style centre adjacent to Cloud 9 Restaurant at the top of Bilia Bullet chairlift. Purpose-built beginner terrain around the centre provides an ideal learning area. If it's entertainment you want keep your eyes peeled for Pete the Snow Dragon, a Falls Creek Night Show is happening 7th July - 25th August, bungy trampolinebocce on snow (or more commonly known as Snocce) or get creative with a snowman challenge (held every Wednesday and Saturday).



The Mt Buller Ski & Snowboard School is home to the Buller Kids Centre, catering for up to 175 children from the ages of three months to six years. The Centre incorporates the popular 3-6 Bunyips Ski Program and the Crèche for 3mths-3 yr olds.

The Kids Centre is located on Level 2 at the rear of the Ski & Snowboard School building on Bourke Street and has a dedicated entrance overlooking the Magic Forest. Children enrolled in the crèche enjoy a wide range of activities including arts and crafts, story time, music activities and games.

Popular, entertaining, educational and exciting - the Buller Kids Centre is one of the happiest places at Mt Buller.

On Saturdays and Sundays from 7 July to 26 August 2018 you can ski, board or take a lesson on Bourke St ski run or go tobogganing in the Village Snowplay Park until 8.30pm, all under lights!

Mt Stirling combines stunning snow gum forests with super cross-country trails. A true winter adventure playground and an ideal place to experience the wonders of snowcamping, tobogganing, cross-country skiing and snow shoeing, all within a pristine alpine environment.

Snow play and tobogganing are fun activities especially for little ones. Grab a molded plastic toboggan (the only type you are able to use on Mt Stirling) and hit the specially designed toboggan run located at Telephone Box Junction.



Mount Donna Buang - where Families flock to the snow. This would have to be Melbourne's best free snow destination and only a two hour drive (give or take) from Melbourne.

Spend a magical day on the snow with plenty of snow play, snowman making and tobogganing. If the kids have been begging you to see the snow and you're not up for a fancy resort, avoid the hefty fees of a ski resort in favour of FREE snow play! Here's our tried and tested tips.
