If you're after something out of the ordinary and a day trip where one visit just won't be enough - these picturesque out of towners' are just that (and some more).

Alowyn Gardens, Yarra Glen

alowyn gardens vic day trip 1

Meander through the 'secret' gardens and if you're here at the right time of year (generally first couple of weeks in October) you'll take in the beauty of the arch full of wisteria - magical!

It's a mixed bag here (but full to the trip of goodness) - formal gardens, edible gardens, Australian native gardens, birch tree forest, poppy field, perennials, a nursery and cafe. It's certainly breath-takingly beautiful from every angle.

As you sit amongst the trees, vines and roses you can enjoy your devonshire tea from the cafe. While you're enjoy a spot of peacefullness the kids can hang out on the big sized chess board.

Alowyn Gardens is definitely the 'Hidden Gem' of the Yarra Valley.

Gardens of Tieve Tara, Mount Macedon

The Gardens of Tieve Tara in Mt Macedon that can only be described as truely splendid...and enchanting and they're very kid-friendly.

Enter via the black gates and pop your $8 entry (per adult) into the donations box and then enjoy the spectacular gardens.

Pack a picnic as there's plenty of open space to sit down and enjoy the view.

Special areas within the gardens have been created to keep children thoroughly entertained. With little seating just for them, a fairy garden and two play areas full of equipment plus duck and geese feeding, children will delight in the fairytale of the gardens just as much as the adults.

So start planning your day trip - this is one beauty you simply can't miss!

Cloudehill Nursery and Gardens, Olinda

From the moment you step into the gardens, you are enchanted by the amazing landscapes, secret doorways, neatly pruned hedges which formed interesting structures, huge varieties of flowers, plants and trees, and paths which lead us into woodland.

For those children that are able to walk and run, this is a wonderful 'playground' for them...a place for them to freely explore, climb and observe nature! For the adults, we can't think of a nicer way to spend an afternoon than to leisurely stroll through the impressive gardens followed by coffee and cake!

Lavandula Swiss Italian Farm, Shepherds Flat

We adore it here as it sums up everything we want from a country escape. Relaxation, fresh air, nature, a picturesque vista, somewhere to eat and if you watch your little one's face....it really says it all....Freedom! It's a BIG Mama favourite. Lavandula is positively beautiful in all seasons.

There's lots to see and do here. Get back to nature with the friendly farm animals. You can feel safe when your kids pat Theodora the Donkey or get amongst the geese, to add to the punch you'll also find Emu's, Pascal the black pony, chooks, llamas, a terrier and a cat.

Eat al fresco nestled under the Ash trees, take in the view of the rolling hills and olive trees, the kids can chase the butterflies and the grown-ups can indulge in a vino as La Trattoria is fully licenced. If outside doesn't seem inviting enough snuggle up in the warmth of the fire inside on the bench seating. The kids can grab one of the numerous books from the pile then tuck into lavender scones made on-site with cream and homemade jam. Truely the best.

Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens, Sherbrooke

The Alfred Nicholas Memorial Gardens is a magical stop off after you've eaten at the Piggery Cafe next door (and you can walk off all that food)!

The descent into the gardens and the lake at the bottom is best done down the garden steps if you are able, stopping off at the pavilion for a 'breather' if required. Once at the lake level, the paths are all flat and meander around the lake providing stunning views of water reflections and Japanese bridges (although these were closed on our last visit but on other visits we could wonder over them). There's scattered seating to take in the views and reflect on the beauty.
